The sinker featured in the photo was sent to us from the Gentleman who created our molds. This is the first one he cast to show us how they look. All of our new weights will feature the R from our logo on both sides. I wrote a little post about our sputniks and their use. Hope you enjoy.
After we produce each one of our sinkers, it is visually inspected for its craftsmanship and recycled if it has imperfections. Our sinkers are handcrafted using high-quality high strength American Stainless-Steel components and 98% Pure Lead that is recycled locally. Our sputnik sinkers are designed for long cast Pier and Surf Fishing which is our passion. We use spring back straightened Stainless-Steel wire for extra holding strength and for safety reasons, available in 2 – 12oz including different shapes and purposes. The specific design of our fishing sinkers serves a very specific and extremely useful purpose if properly used. Our sinkers are molded in an Aluminum CNC cut mold. Using a CNC machined mold guarantees precision with clean sharp edges and no flash at the joint line.
What sets them apart from the rest and makes the Sputnik fishing weights unique?
- Their body shape which can be from the more common “Bomb” body shapes to a small “Oval” shaped body makes them extremely aerodynamically efficient, which allow the angler to be able to cast long distances accurately.
- The wire legs of a Sputnik fishing weight release and break free from their respective slots whenever sufficient pulling pressure is applied which makes them easier to retrieve.
- The mere advantage of their breakaway or folding wire arms is that it’s far easier to reel the Sputnik sinker in, than if the wires were in a fixed position like on the more commonly used spider weights, meaning you don’t have to fight with the sinkers leg digging themselves back in during the retrieve.
The surf and current conditions will determine what fishing weights and weight range one can use. There are a few things you should always consider. Here are some examples!
- When fishing with Pyramid Weights and heavy currents keeps moving your baited rig (especially when fishing around a crowded fishing pier and or a crowded beach), subsequently causing you to require the use of a pyramid sinker heavier than 6-8 ounces which will probably end up putting you out of the rated casting weight range of your fishing rod.
- When fishing with a fishing pole that isn’t rated for the weight size pyramid sinker that conditions require.
- Any time there are heavier currents especially when you are using larger baits.
- Please don’t use them where you expect to have lots of break offs due to snags, we do offer a version with a lift tail built in. They also work great for high-speed reels the tail will lift and keep the weight from dragging while reeling in.
Casting out heavier pyramid sinker isn’t always the right answer, think of it like this, since you are already casting perhaps a heavier bait, if you add a heavy sinker, chances are the payload will become almost (uncast able) and consequently, you will end up with a casting break off. What we recommend and offer is to learn how to properly use a Sputnik Weight. Sputnik sinkers offer much greater holding power at a lower weight ratio than other fishing sinkers do. Remember that sputnik sinkers will help prevent your weight from moving in the surf, they work perfectly for holding bottom on a lighter weight range under almost any fishing conditions, they are good for holding a lighter weight when conditions and your equipment aren’t rated for throwing anything heavier. They are aerodynamic which allows them to fly extremely well during a cast. The stainless-steel legs lock in place on their respective slots and anchor in the sand, once you are ready to retrieve your fishing rig simply reel up any slack on your line then apply pulling pressure on the line and the legs will snap free to allow for an easy retrieval. Sometimes they can be hard to retrieve out of the sand if the legs haven’t been properly adjusted. Also, they can easily be dislodged when setting the weight if the leg to wire or roller slot pressure is set loosely. There is a balance between being too tight or too loose. I sometimes tighten my legs up, so it is hard to dislodge for example when I am using large bait. I really like to use the 3 and 4-ounce Sputnik Weights. It’s generally an ideal weight for most rods that are being commonly used by most anglers since they can aid to achieve great casting distances. With my experience with our weights, you can generally subtract 2 ounces from what pyramid you normally throw.
